Backgammon is a game of logic that requires tactic in the opening, middle, and ending phases of the game. The ending phase is particularly tricky as it is the timeliest part of the race when skills and logic come into play. It is especially invigorating to beat your opponent when you were clearly behind at the end game. So when your opponent's obviously ahead but you still have a few anchors in the competitor's inner board, execute a back game strategy to regain your timing and win from behind. So, how does the backgammon back game strategy work?
Well, the fact that you have an anchor or two in your opponent's inner board already works to your advantage. You have to keep these anchors as long as you can. This way, your competitor's chances to bear in or move the checkers into the home board are reduced because of your blocks. Your objective is hit a blot late in the race and to keep that checker from entering the board by creating a prime on your inner board.
Now, if you don't have anchors in your opponent's home board, you have to set up your back game strategy. Break a point or leave a blot in your inner board and anticipate that your competitor will hit that blot so you can re-enter it to your advantage. Use your re-entered checkers to create anchors in your opponent's home board and, at the same time, build a defense on your home board.
Of course there is a chance of a busted back game. That can happen when, in waiting for that opportunity to hit an opponent's blot, you've moved your checkers so deep into your home board that you have broken your inner board prime. When you've hit an opponent's blot in this case, there's no way to block it from re-entering and running home.
When you find yourself nearing the end game and your opponent is ahead in the race. Set up a backgammon back game strategy by keeping anchors on your competitor's home board while you set up a prime in your inner board. When your opponent leaves a blot, carry out the back game strategy by hitting that blot. Run your checkers to your home board while your opponent's unable to re-enter because of your prime. And remember, resist having a busted back game and you'll soon be winning that backgammon game even when you're behind the race.
